“The House Beautiful: Scottish designers of the Aesthetic movement.’’

A Lecture by Max Donnelly

Aestheticism, a movement embracing beauty and ‘art for art’s sake’ flourished in Britain, Australia and North America from about 1870 to 1900.  Max Donnelly explores the outstanding contributions of four ambitious, talented Scots – Christopher Dresser, Daniel Cottier, John Moyr Smith and Bruce J. Talbert. Their often-interconnected work contributed to the international Aesthetic movement.

Max Donnelly is Curator of Furniture and Woodwork, 1800-1915, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In 2021, he published a co-edited monograph entitled Daniel Cottier: Designer, Decorator, Dealer.
